Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology to
Kick Off 75th Anniversary Year at Miami Boat Show

December 16, 2004, Edgewater, MD: The Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology is preparing to kick off its 75th Anniversary Year during the Miami International Boat Show. Westlawn will host a Cocktail Party Reception on Thursday, February 17, 2005, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Bass Museum of Art — just steps away from the Miami Beach Convention Center. During this event, Westlawn will be highlighting the "art of yacht design" by featuring the designs of its alumni in a gallery setting. There will also be an awards ceremony, which will include the induction of a "to be announced" designer into a newly established Designers Hall of Fame.

"This year is a huge milestone for our school," states Dave Gerr, Director of Westlawn. "Since 1930 Westlawn has been providing the education necessary for anyone with the drive and desire to become a practicing yacht and small-craft designer. It is amazing to look back over all this time to see how many Westlawn students and graduates have contributed to the current marine community we all work in. Our students and graduates not only go on to become designers, but they work as marine surveyors, brokers, boat builders and manufacturers, production managers, production design researchers, instructors at institutions of higher learning, in the boating safety departments of the Coast Guard, and even directors of standards organizations, and this is why we are so excited to not only be celebrating the school's history, but how Westlawn has contributed to the industry as a whole through our students," concluded Gerr.

All small craft and yacht designers, and design firms that would like to lend their support and/or attend the celebration are encouraged to contact Westlawn at westlawn@abycinc.org or by calling (410) 956-7100.

Founded in 1930, the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology is the only nationally accredited and state certified distance-learning school of small-craft design in the United States. As the not-for-profit educational affiliate of the American Boat and Yacht Council, Westlawn's primary function is to assure a continual source of highly skilled designers to the marine industry.
