ABYC's Composite Boat Builder Certification (CBBC) Met With Success
December 3, 2003, Edgewater, MD: The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) today announced that the inaugural session of the "Composite Boat Builder Certification (CBBC)" program, presented by program partner Structural Composites, Inc. was met with great success. Held at the 2003 International Boatbuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) in Miami, FL, a number of mostly supervisory level individuals participated in the session, resulting in a 90 percent overall success rate. These individuals will be the first to have earned the designation of ABYC Composite Boat Builder Certification.
Scott Lewit, President of Structural Composites, Inc. led the two-day program that concluded with a 200-question certification exam in Composite Boatbuilding. Specifically designed to provide boatbuilders with a thorough understanding of marine composite construction, topics covered included materials in use today, production and advance manufacturing processes, structural details and hardware installation, quality assurance, and safety and environmental compliance.
"As a result of feedback from the participants of the pilot program held at IBEX, we will also be developing a spinoff course that will be specifically designed for Laminators," said Bonnie Barsa, ABYC's Education Director. "We hope to be able to offer this course by January 2004," stated Barsa.
The ABYC CBBC program is the latest addition to ABYC's Convenience Learning Program, where ABYC will bring the course and instructor directly to the facility. Marine manufacturers and associations interested in having the program presented at one of their facilities or conferences should contact ABYC's Education Director.
ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boatbuilding and repair in the United States for going-on 50 years. ABYC is actively involved with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as well as certification programs for marine technicians.
