September 25, 2003, Edgewater, MD: The premier presentation of the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) / Structural Composites, Inc., "Composite Boat Builder Certification (CBBC)", will be held at this year's International Boatbuilders' Exhibition & Conference (IBEX) in Miami, FL. The certification course will be held on Monday, October 27 and Tuesday, October 28, 2003 from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. on both days. The certification exam will be held on Wednesday, October 29, 2003 from 9:00 a.m. – 12 noon.

The certification program is specifically geared to provide boat builders with a thorough understanding of marine composite construction. Scott Lewit, President of Structural Composties, Inc. and a leading instructor in composites education will be teaching the course at IBEX, as well as future ABYC composite certification programs. Topics covered in the course will be:

  • Materials in use today;
  • Production and advanced manufacturing processes;

  • Quality assurance; and
  • Safety and environmental compliance.

At the completion of the course, and with a passing score on the exam, attendees will earn a designation of ABYC Composite Boat Builder Certification. Participants can attend the premier IBEX presentation of this course for free, but there is a $250 fee to take the certification exam (includes the manual and testing fees).

Registration for the course is on a first come, first-serve basis. To register for the course and/or certification exam, and to purchase the instructional manual, contact the ABYC Education Department at (410) 956-1050.

The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) is a not-for-profit organization that has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for nearly 50 years.
