Marine Industry Education Summit Officially Named:
COMITT (Conference on Marine Industry Technical Training)

February 3 – 5, 2005; Fort Lauderdale, FL

September 23, 2004, Edgewater, MD; Chicago, IL; and Brooklin, ME: ABYC, NMMA and Professional BoatBuilder Magazine (PBB), organizers and co-producers of the highly anticipated 2005 marine industry educational summit, announced today the official name for the upcoming event. COMITT (Conference On Marine Industry Technical Training) will take place in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, February 3 – 5, 2005.

"COMITT was chosen as the most appropriate name for the summit to recognize the commitment segments of the marine industry have to make toward improving the current state of technical education and training within the marine industry in order to attract, recruit and retain a highly proficient and effective workforce," stated Carl Cramer, publisher of PBB and co-Director of IBEX.

The first two days of COMITT will feature a dynamic and vital forum of information exchange — one that will include discussions on different strategies and on uniting the industry's education and training efforts. As an industry, the forum will serve to reinforce the importance of workforce professional development. The last day will be dedicated to providing, education program participants the opportunity to choose from a selection of on-site tours of industry-related facilities.

"Industry and educators have not adequately discussed, coordinated and matched industry workforce needs to existing technical training programs, and that is contributing to the workforce crisis many of our marine businesses are facing today," remarked ABYC President Skip Burdon. "It is imperative that we gather together and focus our attention on finding solutions to our growing workforce challenges, and COMITT will begin that process," he concluded.

"The name is perfect," said NMMA President, Thom Dammrich. "To reach higher levels of performance and higher levels of customer satisfaction we need industry and educators to commit to providing the right training to the right people at the right time. Therefore, I am asking for broad industry support and participation," concluded Dammrich.

Registration Information:
Participants can register online at www.abycinc.org, or have a conference brochure mailed to them by contacting Bonnie Barsa, ABYC Education Director at (410) 956-1050, ext. 31 or bbarsa@abycinc.org. The cost to attend will be $250 for Business/Industry, $200 for Trade Associations, $150 for post-secondary institutions and $100 for high schools. The three co-producers are also encouraging business planners who attend COMITT to consider sponsoring a high school; especially those with programs in the marine industry, to attend the conference.

Co-produced by ABYC, NMMA and PBB, COMITT will provide a forum to discuss, present and demonstrate industry support of technical workforce education, training, certification and professional development. And, to become the internationally recognized leading summit to highlight the marine industry's commitment to developing and maintaining a highly-skilled and technically proficient workforce.
