New Elkhorn/Westlawn Spline Weight Available
September 4, 2003 Edgewater, MD: The Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology today announced that as a result of working with Elkhorn Composites of Watsonville, CA, tooling makers, marine draftsmen, designers and students can now purchase "Elkhorn/Westlawn Spline Weights".
These classic marine drafting instruments are weights used to hold splines in place, enabling draftsmen to draw precise curves. The Elkhorn/Westlawn Spline Weights are coated, cast-lead, with felt-pad bottom and cast-in-place spline hooks, shaped in the traditional "duck" or "whale" pattern.
In the past, Westlawn had provided Westlawn students with hollow plastic spline weight shells that were filled with metal shot to make them heavy enough to use. Though they were workable, these plastic shells were a compromise at best.
"For many years, it has been practically impossible to purchase traditional, solid, cast-lead spline weights," said Westlawn Director, Dave Gerr. "The Elkhorn/Westlawn Spline Weights, at about 75 ounces each, are slightly heavier than all previously available spline weights, and are no longer a compromise for our Westlawn students and others who desire to purchase them," continued Gerr. "These are the 'real' thing when it comes to spline weights, and we are excited to be able to direct marine industry professionals to these valuable drafting tools," concluded Gerr.
The Elkhorn/Westlawn Spline Weights are available not only to Westlawn students but to the general public for $27.50 each. They are a practical gift for the marine designer and students, as well as desk-top conversation pieces for marine industry professionals. The Elkhorn/Westlawn Spline Weights are a product wholely produced and sold by Elkhorn Composites of Watsonville, CA and is not in any way directly affiliated with the Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology.
