ABYC and SUNY Maritime College Offer
Basic Marine Engine and Diesel Certification Courses
August 1-3, 2005 and August 4-5, 2005

July 13, 2005, Edgewater, MD: The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) Basic Marine Engines course is scheduled for August 1 - 3, 2005 at the State University of New York (SUNY) Maritime College campus, located in Throgs Neck, NY. This primary course is followed by the Diesel Engine & Support Systems Certification course on August 4 - 5, 2005 at the same location.

The Basic Marine Engines course is a three-day seminar designed for the less experienced engine technician, marine surveyor and anyone interested in the basics of trouble-shooting, maintaining and installing marine engines. The essentials of both gasoline and diesel fueled engines and related systems will be covered, as well as the following topics:

  • Fuel systems (both gas & diesel);
  • Ignition systems on gasoline fueled engines;
  • Basic ABYC exhaust system requirements; and
  • Engine cooling systems (fresh and raw water) - explained in detail.

The two-day Diesel Engine & Support Systems Certification course, which immediately follows the Basic Marine Engines course, is designed for experienced marine diesel engine technicians, or those who have attended the three-day Basic Engines course. Cooling systems, electrical systems, fuel systems, ventilation systems, exhaust systems, control systems, and fuel injection systems as they pertain to diesel engines. This class concludes with the ABYC certification exam.

Registration:
The education fee for the Basic Marine Engines course is $449 for ABYC members, $614 for non-members, and the fee for Diesel Certification course is $425 for ABYC members, $590 for non-members. Classes will be held at the SUNY Maritime College campus located on Long Island Sound in the Throgs Neck section of the Bronx. The Maritime College has been training maritime industry professionals since 1874.

ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for over 50 years. ABYC is actively involved with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as well as education and certification programs for marine technicians.
