ABYC Announces Scholarship Winner
April 16, 2003, Edgewater, MD: The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) recently selected Mr. Ryan Hunter from Port Moody, British Columbia as the 2002 recipient of the Norman G. Owens Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, Inc. Scholarship. Hunter was chosen out of several applicants because of his background, dedication to education and recognized performance in the Westlawn course. The money will be applied to his course study fees.
Hunter is also studying at the British Columbia Institute of Technology where he will be completing a Certificate in Computer Aided Design Technology program, and hopes to complete his studies with a Bachelor of Commerce from Royal Roads University in Victoria, BC. Prior to enrolling in Term 2 at Westlawn, Hunter was employed as Head Designer at MetalCraft Marine, Inc., working under the Chief Designer and General Manager. Hunter was responsible for various tasks including hull and superstructure design and analysis.
"After completing school, I hope to use my education and experience to gain employment in the field of design," Hunter says. "In particular, I hope to work for a production boatbuilding company that manufactures fiberglass powerboats, and I look forward to having the opportunity to give back to the boatbuilding community," Hunter added.
"ABYC has been administering the Owens Scholarship on behalf of Mr. Norman G. Owens for over five years now. We whole heartedly support such a scholarship that is being used by future generations of boat builders to keep this industry young and strong through education!" says Skip Burdon, President/CEO of ABYC.
Mr. Owens from the Owens Yacht building family donates $1,000 each year to assist aspiring boat and yacht designers who are taking courses at Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, Inc.

The Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology, Inc. was founded in 1930 by professional yacht designers Gerald Taylor White and E.S. Nelson, to provide complete instruction in the field of small craft and yacht design.
