Participants Introduced to
CE Requirements & ISO Standards at ABYC Seminar

April 4, 2003, Edgewater, MD: As part of the American Boat & Yacht Council's (ABYC) growing list of educational course offerings, ABYC recently conducted its first-ever "Exporting to Europe: CE Requirements & ISO Standards" seminar in Annapolis, MD. The seminar was designed to introduce participants to the ISO European requirements for recreational craft, and highlight and review the necessary documentation required to successfully market in the European Community (CE).

Participants from several areas of the marine industry including engineers, manufacturers and designers attended this three-day course to hear industry experts, Uli Heinemann, Jack Horner, Tom Marhevco, Rob Schofield, Ed Sherman and Mike Vollmer present on proper documentation, including retention; specific contacts in the European Community; owner's manual requirements; concepts that drive the European Certification initiative; and a detailed review of ISO standards used in support of the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD).

Adam Garthaus, Cabo Yachts said, "I would recommend this seminar to every boatbuilder exporting to Europe." "The speakers were very informative, and it was worth traveling from California to Maryland to attend," added Garthaus.

"As U.S. manufacturers broaden their market reach globally, knowledge of and compliance with ISO requirements is a real issue," says Skip Burdon, President/CEO of ABYC. "All industries are affected by ISO, and the marine industry is certainly no exception," added Burdon. "As a U.S. representative to ISO, ABYC works diligently to promote the U.S. marine industry's interests, to harmonize ISO with ABYC standards and perhaps most importantly, to keep the U.S. boating industry both informed and educated so they can effectively compete in the global market place," stated Burdon.

Future dates of the next "Exporting to Europe: CE Requirements & ISO Standards" will be posted on the ABYC Web Site, located at www.abycinc.org as they are scheduled.

ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for nearly 50 years and is actively involved with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as well as certification programs for marine technicians. These standards are available on CD-ROM and in printed form. Membership and general information can be requested by calling (410) 956-1050 or by visiting the ABYC Web Site at www.abycinc.org.
