ABYC Receives Education Grant from IBEX
March 7, 2003, Edgewater, MD: The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) announced today the receipt of a $10,000 education grant from the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition and Conference (IBEX) for use in developing programs and courses that directly benefit the marine industry.
"ABYC has been an active supporter and contributor of IBEX ," said Carl Cramer, director of IBEX and publisher of Professional BoatBuilder magazine. "They have a track record of presenting very informative seminars for IBEX in the fields of Regulations & Compliance, and Ship's Systems," said Cramer. "We therefore are pleased to support their continued educational efforts and look forward to working closely with them in the future to broaden and strengthen professional training within the industry."
Bonnie Barsa, Education Director of ABYC said, "This specific donation will be used to directly fund the curriculum and test development of ABYC's new Corrosion Certification course." Barsa further stated, "ABYC hopes to offer this new course in the Fall 2003."
ABYC continues to develop educational programs for the marine industry, with a strong focus on industry-developed standards. They have also developed a series of comprehensive, five-day training courses to certify technicians in the specialty areas of electrical, air-conditioning/refrigeration, diesel engines and support systems and gasoline engines and support systems.
"Education is going to be a major thrust for ABYC in the next decade," declared Skip Burdon, President and CEO of ABYC. "Continually developing and improving our current educational line as well as creating new certification programs and courses such as the Corrosion Certification course is made possible in-part through cooperative and generous grants such as this," added Burdon. "We sincerely thank IBEX for their support."
ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for nearly 50 years and is actively involved with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as well as certification programs for marine technicians. These standards are available on CD-ROM and in printed form. Membership and general information can be requested by calling (410) 956-1050 or by visiting the ABYC Web Site at www.abycinc.org.
