ABYC Announces Recipients of Annual Awards
March 4, 2003, Edgewater, MD: The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) announced the recipients of its annual awards during its Annual Meeting and Reception held recently in Miami, FL. These awards are presented annually to recognize the significant work of individuals and companies in furthering ABYC's core boating safety mission.
"Historically, ABYC has presented these awards to highly qualified and very deserving individuals," said Skip Burdon, ABYC's President and CEO. "Given the large number of volunteers and the enormous amount of work they put forth, it is a very difficult task to select the final recipients. They all make such valuable contributions. Our member volunteers are the primary reason why ABYC is so successful."
The ABYC Service Award - Mr. Bret Bretnall, President, Raritan Engineering Co., Inc.
This award is presented each year to an ABYC member who has served the Council over a long period of time, through active participation on committees, Boards or other volunteer venues, in a manner that materially benefits the goals of ABYC. This year's recipient was chosen because of an extremely high level of energy and participation in many of the vital functions of ABYC. He is past chair of the board for ABYC, serves on the executive committee, and is also the chairman of the Hull Piping PTC.
ABYC Horizon Award - Mr. Greg Eck, Marine Products Manager, Yanmar Diesel America
The Horizon Award is presented each year to an ABYC member who has made significant contributions to the future success and growth of ABYC. This year's recipient was chosen because of his successful efforts to actively recruit several new ABYC members at a variety of membership levels, as well as supporting the continued ABYC membership of other organizations. He is a member of the ABYC Board of Directors, and is also an active participant on the ABYC Membership and Development Committee.
ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for nearly 50 years and is actively involved with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as well as certification programs for marine technicians. These standards are available on CD-ROM and in printed form. Membership and general information can be requested by calling (410) 956-1050 or by visiting the ABYC Web Site at www.abycinc.org.
