ABYC Elects New Officers

February 27, 2003, Edgewater, MD: The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) today announced the election of its new officers (Chair, Vice Chair, Technical Chair and Treasurer). Election results were validated at ABYC's Annual Meeting recently held in Miami, FL. Representing key segments of all facets of the recreational marine industry, ABYC's Board of Directors provides guidance in furthering ABYC's core mission of developing standards, educational programs and safety guidelines for pleasurecraft, marine professionals and the boating public.

During the meeting, Past Chairman of the Board Philip Connor, owner and President of Crockett Bros. Boatyard officially introduced the incoming Chairman, Jim Ellis, who shared his plans to continue to promote boating safety through education and industry partnerships.

Chairman of the Board - Mr. Jim Ellis
Mr. Ellis served most recently as ABYC's Vice Chairman and Chairman of the Executive Committee. He is the President of BoatU.S. and is Chairman of the BoatU.S. Foundation. Ellis has also held executive leadership roles with National Safe Boating Council, and is currently on the board of Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation. He is a member of U.S. Sailing, the Annapolis Yacht Club, the Chesapeake Yacht Racing Association and Potapskut Sailing Association.

Vice Chairman of the Board - Mr. Dennis Graham
In addition to serving as the Vice Chairman, Mr. Graham is the Chairman of the ABYC Executive Committee, Chair of the Control Systems Project Technical Committee (PTC) and member of the Nominating Committee. He is Chief Engineer, New Product Development for Teleflex Morse, Inc., is the holder of four patents, and has written several technical publications. Graham is a member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Society of Automotive Engineers Marine Technical Committee.

Technical Chairman of the Board - Mr. Bill Drake
Mr. Drake is the Chairman of the Technical Board and Chairman of the ABYC Electrical Committee. Drake is Chairman of ABYC's Electrical PTC, and is also a speaker at ABYC's Electrical Systems in Boats seminars. He is a member of several organizations, including the National Electrical Code Technical Correlating Committee and the International Association of Electrical Inspectors. Mr. Drake is the Vice President of Engineering at Marinco.

Treasurer - Mr. Gerry Douglas
In addition to serving as Treasurer, Mr. Douglas is also the Chair of the ABYC Business and Financial Planning Committee and is a member of ABYC's Technical Information PTC, Executive and Nominating Committees. Douglas is Vice President and a Principal of Catalina Yachts, and is a member of the Industrial Designers Society of America, Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers.

ABYC's newest member of the Board of Directors is Mr. Chris Washburn of Washburn's Boatyard, Inc.

I am honored to work with and for such a professional team," said Skip Burdon, ABYC President and CEO. "With Jim Ellis at the Board's helm, I am confident we will strategically chart ABYC's course toward success well into the future," Burdon concluded.

ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boat building and repair in the United States for nearly 50 years and is actively involved with the development of international standards as well as certification programs for marine technicians.
