Three Westlawn Alumni Win Design Competitions in 2004
Westlawn Graduate Ben Dodarell Wins Camper & Nicholson/Boat
International "New Concepts" Design Competition
February 9, 2005, Edgewater, MD: The Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology is proud to announce that 2004 Westlawn graduate Ben Dodarell won the 2004 Camper & Nicholson/Boat International "New Concepts" Design Competition, in the 45-60 meter motoryacht category. Dodarell is the third Westlawn alumni or student to win a design competition prize in 2004.
Dave Gerr, Director of Westlawn said, "In addition to Ben, graduate Doug Frolich took first prize in the 2004 Blue Water Sailing Magazine design competition, and current student Charles Magnan won honorable mention in that same competition. We are extremely excited about the accomplishments of all our students, and I know we will see more exciting and solid work coming from Ben, Doug and Charles' drawing boards in the future!"
Ben's design is 56.39 m (183 ft.) LOA; 51.18 m (167 ft.) DWL; 10.97 m (36 ft.) beam; and 3.35 m (11 ft.) draft. Power is twin 2,250-hp Caterpillar diesels, for a top speed of 17.5 knots and a cruising speed of 12.5 knot, with a 4,500 mile range. The design is to be classed to ABS A1, with MCA approval.

About eleven years ago, Ben began his career in the marine industry as a welder for Broward, where he worked his way up to the design department. For the past five and a half years he has been part of the design team at Hargrave Custom Yachts. Thus, Ben is continuing a long Westlawn tradition, as the renowned Jack Hargrave is one of Westlawn's most distinguished and successful graduates. Hargrave Custom Yachts (www.hargrave-usa.com) carries on the Jack-Hargrave legacy, and Ben Dodarell extends the Westlawn and Hargrave tradition of fine design into the twenty-first century.
