Cummins MerCruiser Diesel Goes Platinum In Support of ABYC and Boating Safety

January 28, 2004, Edgewater, MD: The American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) today announced that Cummins MerCruiser Diesel (CMD) recently broadened their long-standing commitment to boating safety by increasing their annual membership support level to the standards setting organization.

Cummins MerCruiser Diesel, an ABYC member since 1995, increased their membership from a Manufacturing Membership to the prestigous Platinum Level Membership. Cummins MerCruiser Diesel is a joint venture between Cummins, Inc. and Mercury Marine with a long term vision to provide boat builders with a complete integrated system for vessel propulsion, power generation, controls and information for diesel engines.

Gary Dickman, CMD Vice President of Sales and Marketing said, "We decided to visibly demonstrate our ongoing commitment to, and support of ABYC's mission by upgrading our ABYC membership to the Platinum level. From new product development and design, to advancements in our electronics and vessel integration programs, we definitely see the value of ABYC membership in many different areas," commented Dickman. "For instance, having ABYC trained and certified marine technicians is part of our investment in our people, in our engineering and manufacturing quality assurance initiatives, and in our overall commitment to excellence. It sends a clear message to the boating public — they can feel confident and secure having a Cummins Mercruiser Diesel in their boat!" concluded Dickman.

Skip Burdon, ABYC President and CEO said, "Being an ABYC member signals your customers that you care about their safety and peace of mind." "Upgrading to a level such as Platinum, is a clear indication to all that Cummins MerCruiser Diesel is committed to maintaining high industry standards and to marine workforce education and training as a foundation for building safer and better products," continued Burdon. "We sincerely thank Cummins MerCruiser Diesel for their continued support of ABYC."

ABYC has been developing, writing and updating the safety standards for boatbuilding and repair in the United States for going-on 50 years. ABYC is actively involved with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) as well as certification programs for marine technicians. These standards are available on CD-ROM and in printed form. Membership and general information can be requested by visiting the ABYC web site at www.abycinc.org.
