Certification Programs

The ABYC Technician Certification program was developed to improve the quality and professionalism of boat maintenance, manufacture, and repair. This Certification program is designed to provide standards-based, technical education for marine technicians throughout the marine industry. This program will;

  • Improve customer satisfaction with boat maintenance and repair,
  • Increase profits resulting from better trained, more effective marine technicians, and
  • Promote a more stable, professional, technical workforce through the creation of a recognized career path within the industry.
The ABYC Marine Technician Certification Program is designed for the mid to high level experienced technician. The program places strong emphasis on trouble shooting and analysis in accordance with ABYC standards and generally accepted industry practices. The program consists of eight courses covering important technical areas such as Marine Electrical Systems, A/C and Refrigeration, Diesel Engines, Gasoline Engines, Marine Corrosion, and Composite Boat Building. Those who successfully complete each course and pass a nationally accredited certification exam will receive a certificate, a uniform  patch, a listing in ABYC’s online Certified Technician Directory and for all who are an ABYC member, the ability to purchase ABYC Certified Technician signage for their organization’s entrance, showroom or shop floor.

Who Should be Certified?

  • Surveyors
  • Factory Engineers or Managers
  • Marine technicians in boat service and repair
  • Marine technicians in boat building
  • Marine technicians in equipment design and manufacturing

What is an ABYC Master Certified Technician?

"To be among the first group of ABYC Master Certified Technicians is indeed an honor. Over the years I have committed significant resources both in time and money to enhance my skills, and this recognition provides an important way of showing my customers, as well as my industry peers, that I care enough to stay on top of the increasingly complex marine technologies we see in boating today through the ABYC certification program."
      — Jim Overton

The ABYC Certified Master Technician designation is for ABYC Certified Technicians who have successfully passed at least three of any of the eight ABYC Certification exams. These technicians not only have the work experience, but have demonstrated the desire to improve their skills with extensive standards-based technical marine training. After earning the designation of ABYC Master Technician  individuals receive a Master Certified Technician certificate, Master Certified Technician ball cap and web site recognition for attaining this milestone in their careers via ABYC’s online Master Certified Technician listing.  They also become eligible to administer ABYC certification testing and earn a residual income.

How to Get Certified

  • There are several ways to achieve ABYC Technical certification

    • Attend an ABYC Certification Class which is followed by the exam
Note: A foreign translator will be allowed during testing with prior approval
    • Take an ABYC Certification Exam after self study, or other study, via an ABYC testing center on a predetermined test date. See the ABYC Educational Calendar to register for these testing dates.
    • Take an ABYC Certification Exam after self study, or other study, by attending the “test day” during any scheduled ABYC class. (depending on available space)

Set your own career path and take advantage of this unique opportunity to improve your business by having recognized, ABYC certified technicians doing the job right — the first time!

How to Re-Certify
ABYC Certifications are valid for five years. After five years a recertification test must be taken to assure the certified technicians skills and knowledge are current.

You will need an User ID and Password to access the needed exam. To obtain this information call Cris Gardner at ABYC at 410-990-4460 ext 33 then follow the link below.
