ABYC Certifications are first of all a professional credential that states to the public, that you have a thorough understanding of a marine trade. They define you as an expert. The Certification process is different for each student. The Certification process inventories your knowledge of a topic and identifies where your knowledge base is incomplete and where your knowledge base is complete. An overall score awards certification, but every student should realize their weak areas to improve their expertise. If a student is not awarded certification, they must study the areas identified as incomplete and retest when they believe they are ready. ABYC stands ready to support every student with study guides, text books and industry advice. Anyone can sit for certification but not everyone is an expert. The keys to certification success are industry experience, realistic self evaluation, and a disciplined approach to professional self improvement through study and training. ABYC also offers introductory training classes to develop that industry knowledge base that will eventually lead to certification.
