By far and away, boat builders, repair yards and marine surveyors are the biggest users of the ABYC standards, but as a consumer, working knowledge of the standards can assist you in either completing do-it-yourself tasks in a compliant fashion, or enable you to ensure that others do the work according to these standards.
Before buying a boat, ask the dealer if it was built using ABYC standards. If having a boat surveyed, hire a surveyor that is a member of ABYC and insist that they use ABYC standards during the survey. The repair technician in your boatyard should also be an ABYC member, repairing your boat using ABYC standards.
It is easy to find an ABYC member. Simply click on Membership Directory along the top of your screen. You can do a search by location, industry type, name of individual, or name of company.
ABYC now offers two new courses for boat owners. Basic Diesel provides participants with the information needed to understand the needs of their engines. Basic Electricity teaches the basics needed to perform simple repairs, troubleshooting, and maintenance of their boats electrical system. Additional course information can be found under the Education Programs link.
ABYC also sponsors certification courses for marine technicians in Electrical, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, Diesel Engine & Support Systems, Gasoline Engine & Support Systems, Marine Corrosion, Composite Boat Building and Marine Systems. These ABYC certified marine technicians can be found by clicking on the Certified Technician Directory link, also at the top of the screen.
ABYC has been writing safety standards for the design, building, and repairing of boats and their systems for over 50 years. These standards are used by naval architects, boat builders, marine surveyors, marine technicians, lawyers, and many others in the marine industry.
